WALNUT GROVE — The first-ever SWMOBasketball Player of the Week is Walnut Grove senior Logan Thomazin.
The 6’3 senior guard is a four-year starter who broke the state’s career 3-pointers made record in the Tigers’ opening game — a 75-60 win at Verona. He finished with 22 points in the win.
“It means a lot to me. I owe it all to my teammates and coaching staff for getting me the ball and drawing up plays where I will be successful,” Thomazin said.
A fan of Ray Allen and Steph Curry, Thomazin says he grew up learning how to shoot by stretching his range further and further away from the goal all the way out until he reached the volleyball line.
A year ago, he helped Walnut Grove go 30-3 overall and win a Class 1 state championship. The win came on the heels of a runner-up finish the year before.
The Tigers have experienced significant success on the hardwood in boys’ and girls’ basketball over the past decade.
“The average fan definitely doesn’t know that we have about 600 people in our town, 80 kids in our high school and about 40 boys to choose from to make a basketball team,” Thomazin said. “It’s crazy to realize how successful Walnut Grove has been in sports over the past years with the limited options we have.”
In the offseason, Thomazin chose to play college baseball over college basketball as he committed to play at Missouri State. A standout pitcher, Thomazin said he had several colleges reach out to him about playing hoops at the next level.
“I never really considered (college basketball) because I am a baseball guy first, but it truly meant a lot to get interest in baseball and basketball,” he said. “The reason I chose baseball was probably because of the passion me and my dad shared with it. It was both our favorite sports and it was a great way to interact with each other and I feel it’s a huge reason on why we are so close to each other today.”
